Chambang Mut, is a South Sudan photographer born in the village of Maiwut. He moved to the city of Malakal as a young adult and later came to the United States to pursue his education. Chambang received his associate degree from Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY.
As a young man, he used his small camera in Africa as an extensionof daily life taking everyday photographs of subjects that interested him. When Chambang moved to Utica he attended SUNY IT to study Sociology and later Anthropology. Parallel to his studies, his interest in photography was nurtured through a course at The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees. A celebratory trip with fellow refugees from upstate New York to a photo exhibit in Albany inspired him to become a photographer.
Chambang continued to develop his skills at Professional Photographers of America programs and conferences in Nashville, Tennessee and PhotoPlus Expo in New York City. Chambang calls upon his personal experiences, journey as a refugee, knowledge gained from studies in Sociology and Anthropology to see and reflect life’s moments with personal vision and craft. His work documents individual and family experiences throughout Utica and beyond as well as commercial commissions in portraiture, events, pop-up studio and visual essay. He continues his passion in photography by seeking images that capture a moment with intuitionand artistry.
